Teaching Background
Teaching is one of the best ways to learn and become prolific in one’s field. Dr. Williams is very enthusiastic about teaching and her background in classroom lectures is very diverse. In fact, she is the 2018 recipient of the Morehouse College Teaching Excellence Award Sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company and the Georgia Independent College Association. Before becoming an Assistant Professor at Morehouse College, she taught and tutored at The University of Alabama (UA), where she earned my doctorate. She also tutored other students in economics at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, where she attended school as an undergraduate. Dr. Williams varied and extensive teaching experiences over the past 16 years have allowed her to really hone her quantitative skills and express her creativity in lectures. Currently, at Morehouse College, she teaches foundational and intermediate level Microeconomics and Macroeconomics as well as Business Statistics. In the past, she taught Mathematical Economics as well. Because her teaching experiences span over a theoretical and quantitative range of economics topics, she usually assigns mathematically rigorous problems to enhance the problem-solving skills of her students in hopes of improving their understanding of economics as a quantitative behavioral science. Her aim is to cultivate an interactive learning experience in all my teaching.
Dr. Williams One Line Teaching Philosophy
Teaching in economics has been rewarding for Dr. Williams. Her one-line teaching philosophy has been: “You have everyone’s attention; how can you help them to better value economics?” This philosophy has forced Dr. Williams not only to be careful and diplomatic about the knowledge she conveys, but it has also pushed her to be clear about testable concepts. In her early stages of classroom lecture, she struggled to understand things exactly as the book taught them as not to confuse my students. Now, she can teach concepts exactly as she understands them, in hopes that her interpretation will create a permanent resonance in the minds of her students. In the future, she aims to implement more projects, so that the classroom cultivates group work and true application of knowledge. In the interim, Dr. Williams served as a mentor for her students, continued her development through academic and nonacademic training for her students, she has assisted students in understanding rudimentary operations in Excel spreadsheets as well as STATA so that they can procure jobs, internships, and graduate-level degrees.
