Dr. Miesha Jamell Williams is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Morehouse College as well as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy. She is a research associate in the University of New Orleans Urban Entrepreneurship and Policy Research Institute, a board member of the National Economic Association, and a Morehouse College faculty representative in the PREDOC consortium. At Morehouse College, she has served on the council for faculty governance, a centralized committee for institutional effectiveness and budgeting, on the advisory board for Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership, and she has previously led the economics department at Morehouse College as Academic Program Director.
Dr. Williams’ research examines macroeconomic policy and institutional development issues, in African countries and the United States. She has published papers on (1) fiscal and monetary policy issues in African countries; (2) institutional issues including lending practices and reparations in African countries; (3) the impact of monetary policy on blacks since the Great Recession; (4) crime, recidivism, and entrepreneurship in the United States; and (5) policies for governing United States pandemics. Of primary interest to her are studies addressing the effects of interest rate policies set by national central banking facilities, national expenditure policies, and economic disparities.
Dr. Williams's research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Empirical Economics Letters, The American Economist, Enterprise Development and Microfinance, Journal of Economics Race and Policy, as well as Review of Black Political Economy. Additionally, she has presented at several conferences both across the United States and in West Africa. She has traveled for research to places like The Gambia, Nigeria, and Togo as well as, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, and New Orleans. She has also delivered a research presentation via Zoom.
Dr. Williams has participated in funded research efforts sponsored by Koch Foundation, National Science Foundation through AEA Minority Mentoring Program, and Morehouse College Faculty Development Carnegie Research Fellowship Grant. As guest editor for Agricultural and Resource Economics Review, she is working to co-edit and publish a special issue on Social Justice in Agriculture sponsored by USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture through Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association. In the summer of 2021, she was invited to speak at the A.P. Sloan Summer Program Speaker Series at Spelman College.
Dr. Williams obtained her Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in economics from the University of Alabama in 2010 and 2014, respectively. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with a minor in mathematics from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.
